I just bought my 4 year old a used 04' PW 50. When I got it home and really started going over it I noticed that one of the upper fork tubes was bent. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the bottom steering stem race was cracked. Then I noticed that the lower part of the head tube was mushroomed out were the race goes in the tube. The fork tube I can get straightened, but what can I do about the bottom of the tube? It is allowing the front end to wiggle back and forth. Thanks.

My son hit a tree head-on with his 08 PW50 this weekend and basically did the same thing.
When I took it apart, I found that the inner tubes on both sides of the front forks were both bent. I used a hydraulic press to get them pretty close to straight (within 1/8") and went to put the bike back together so he could ride it while I waited on a new set of forks.
While reassembling the front end of the bike, I discovered that he had mushroomed the bottom of the steering tube, and cracked both the top and bottom bearing races.
QUESTION: Has anyone successfully fixed the frame on one of these PW50s, or is it "totalled"? Seems like you could get someone to weld and machine the frame, but once you pay a couple of hundred bucks for that plus a couple of hundred bucks for a new set of forks seems like you may be better off just buying a second bike to use for parts...

I ordered new bearings and races and put it back together a few days ago. With a little trial and error I was able to tighten the nut just enough to prevent the forward and backward wiggle and not cause the bearing to bind. At his level and speed I'll keep a close eye on the fasteners and frame but as he becomes a little quicker I'm sure the mushrooming will worsen. I'm considering a parts bike as well.

Yes, It can be fixed. You have to split the end of the tube with a hax saw. The steering stop has to be removed, and a ring has to be made then welded to the tube along with the steering stop. Replace the bearings and the races with stuff from a bicycle. It can be bought at any bicycle shop. Because the bicylce stuff is heavier. There is other things you can do to the frame. Such as gussets and braces to fix common problems. There is nothing that can't be fixed on these. If any body has any questions please e-mail PastryPixie721@zoominternet.net with the subject of Motorcycle. Thank you.
