I have a 2001 PW80 that I had to rebuild it was missing parts. I put a rebuilt carb in, new gas lines, air filter, now when I start it it pops. Not sure if my carb is adjusted right I followed the book on 1 1/2 turns out for mixture played with the idle screw. Also gas come out of the bottom of the carb.
I read that the needle on the float has to have the rubber coating for it to properly seal? Can the popping be caused buy the reeds?
This bike has been sitting for years till today.
I can't get it to start now not sure if it had to much gas in the carb now.
Any ideas on the popping?

. At the risk of sounding silly ..... did you drain the fuel tank? I wonder if it's not water in the fuel causing the problem.
Other than that, what are the main (crank) bearings like? I had an old RM125 that had flogged out mains that allowed the ignition rotor to touch the pickups. That made it pop and carry on.
As long as your float valve needle has no groove on the tapered section it should seal fine. Some Mikuni valve needles have a rubber coating, some don't. My '82 PW80 has a needle with no rubber.
Hope that gives you food for thought at least. Good luck!

I did drain the fuel tank, but not all of it and the bike had been sitting for a long time. i will take the head off and blow compressed air in it.
I actually took the head off and the piston is soaked with gas and it is dripping out of the exhaust. I think the float needs to be adjusted as well, do you know what the measurements are for setting the float.

Yeah, I did mine yesterday as a matter of fact. My K model Owners Manual said it was 23mm (+or- 1mm) measured from the carb base (gasket removed) to the float bottom edge as it sits in the bike. (ie. if the carb is being held upside-down to measure then it's to the top edge of the float as you look at it.)
I'm still tipping water in the fuel as the problem. If I were you I'd take the tank off it and drain it properly, then rinse it with some metholated spirits (alcohol) to make sure all the water was gone. If this was the problem then I bet you'll probably find water in your new carby now as well, so that might need cleaning out too.
