I just picked up a 1981 PW50 (Y-Zinger) and it started up pretty easily after I sorted out some connection issues with the kill switch. But it won't rev up and stalls when warm. I pulled the plug and observed seemingly weak spark. Plug and plug cap are new, installed by the previous owner.
I measured the resistances of the coil, and got 1.5 ohm at the primary, and 5.5k ohm at the plug wire. The plug cap is an aftermarket NGK with integrated resistor of 5.0k ohm, making the output resistance total 10.5k ohm.
Two questions - First, does anyone have experience with these that could tell me whether they think the coil needs replacement based on the 1.5-ohm primary resistance? And second, would the plug cap resistor be potentially causing issue? Do the stock PW-50 ignition coils have any resistance in the cap, or do people do the resistance checks from the plug cap to ground and expect 5k to 8k-ohm inclusive?
Thanks in advance for any insights anyone can offer.
